The Tea On:
How to Overcome Loneliness Wherever You Are and Whoever You Are With
A loneliness epidemic was declared by America’s Surgeon General in May 2023.
Only a third of Americans say they are happy
According to Harris
Blame it on the rise of technology, the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, or the general shift in modern life priorities, but loneliness and social isolation have become all too common. Only a third of Americans say they are happy (according to Harris Polls). Adults are finding it harder to cultivate meaningful connections in both their social and professional lives, leading to feelings of loneliness, whether they admit it or not. These feelings can negatively impact our mental and physical health, making it harder to cultivate joy regularly.
The Brew On:
Forward from the Founder: Realizing Loneliness and Choosing Connection
I vividly remember teaching a workshop on community and connection at Omega, upstate New York. I was feeling accomplished yet stretched thin—constantly moving from one responsibility to the next, always doing, but rarely pausing. In the middle of a conversation with my mentor, she looked at me and simply asked, “How are you? Are you happy?” I was taken aback. No one had ever asked me that so directly, and I realized I hadn’t even considered the answer. Her question cut through the noise, and for the first time in a while, I was forced to pause and reflect.
What I realized was that I wasn’t happy. Despite the crowds I found myself in, despite the rooms full of people, I felt profoundly lonely. I’d been disconnected from myself and, in turn, from others.
This moment became a turning point—a reminder that even as I help others build community, I need to stay intentional about my own connections. It’s a journey I’m still on today, and it requires continuous, mindful effort.
It was this memory, this moment of reckoning, that came rushing back to me as I developed the Loneliness Prevention Toolkit and the Loneliness Prevention Event Series (available in both English and French). These resources grew out of my own understanding that loneliness isn’t just about physical isolation, but the deeper disconnection we can feel with ourselves and those around us.

The Stir:
A Threshold Moment at Omega
The setting at Omega was idyllic, a sanctuary nestled in nature. Between sessions, we had the chance to eat fresh, farm-to-table meals. The food was wholesome, but what stood out even more were the people I sat with—strangers, yet individuals who felt so present, so available for connection. There was no rush. Here, among these unfamiliar faces, I felt something that had been missing for far too long: the potential for authentic connection.
Yet, as I led my workshop, I realized that I wasn’t fully in that moment. The question my mentor asked me—“Are you happy?”—still echoed in my mind. And the truth? I wasn’t happy. The relentless cycle of speaking engagements, early flights, and constant moving had left me feeling lonely, despite the crowded rooms I found myself in. The irony was sharp: I was leading a workshop on building community and connection, yet I felt disconnected from myself and those around me.
That day, I made a small but significant decision. I chose to lead with more intentionality. Instead of rushing through the workshop, I slowed down. I encouraged open, thoughtful dialogue. I allowed space for silence, for reflection. And, in that process, I began to feel more present, more connected—not just to the participants, but to myself. This simple shift marked the beginning of my journey to reclaim authentic connection in my life.
It was this memory—this threshold moment at Omega—that came rushing back to me as I developed the Loneliness Prevention Toolkit and the Loneliness Prevention Event Series (available in both English and French). These resources were born out of that realization: that loneliness isn’t just about being alone, but about the missed opportunities to truly connect—with ourselves and with others.

Loneliness, despite its pain, often brings to light the things we truly crave—meaningful connections and authentic joy. It forces us to see what’s missing, both in our relationships with others and with ourselves.
In our modern world, society tells us what happiness should look like: the perfect job, the ideal family, the polished social media life. But loneliness occurs when we chase these external markers instead of building real, lasting connections. We feel isolated when our lives look full, but inside, we know something vital is missing.
This is a lesson I continue to learn. Loneliness can strike in the midst of success, and even in a room full of people. But the key is to focus on what truly brings us joy—whether it’s a quiet moment with tea or a deep conversation with someone we care about. These small, intentional moments help bridge the gap between loneliness and connection.
The Pour On:
How to Fuel Connection and Joy in Your Life
When loneliness sets in, it can feel overwhelming. You might wonder, How do I break free from this? The answer isn’t to avoid loneliness but to actively seek connection—with yourself and others. This is an ongoing practice, one that I’m still committed to.
The simple act of sharing tea with someone can open doors to meaningful connections. It’s a moment to pause, to be present, and to listen. Tea, in its simplicity, brings us back to our senses and creates space for honest conversation.
This act of intentional connection—whether it’s with yourself or someone else—helps you realign with what brings you joy. And when you make joy a priority, you’ll start to notice a shift. The loneliness that once felt overwhelming begins to dissolve as you foster connections that truly nourish you.

What I’ve Learned About Connection and Loneliness
Overcoming loneliness isn’t a one-time achievement; it’s a journey, one I’m still navigating. There are days when I feel deeply connected to those around me and other days when the loneliness creeps back in. But each time, I return to the simple practices that bring me back into alignment—like sharing tea, taking a moment to pause, or reaching out to someone I trust.
Here’s what I’ve learned along the way:
- Increased Presence: When I focus on being present, whether in a conversation or while sipping tea, I feel less isolated and more connected to the moment.
- Deeper Relationships: The more I align with my own needs, the more meaningful my relationships become. I no longer chase connection out of fear, but out of genuine desire.
- Balance at Work: Loneliness can sneak in when I’m too busy to notice. But when I make time for reflection and connection, my work becomes more fulfilling and less draining.
- Confidence in Parenting: As a parent, I want to model joy and connection for my children. By actively working on my own well-being, I show them what it means to create relationships based on love and trust.
- Growth and Resilience: I’ve come to understand that loneliness is part of the human experience. But by embracing it and working through it, we emerge stronger and more aligned with our true selves.
