The Tea
Our clothes can have a powerful influence on our self-confidence and our enhanced overall mood, but fashion can be a source of annoyance or even pain for many.
Having worked in the industry for almost a decade, I’ve seen my fair share of the highs and lows that fashion can bring. I’ve witnessed beautiful women crying in fitting rooms because the item they tried on didn’t look like they expected it would. I’ve also seen fashion be a source of happiness and empowerment, bringing on grins, happy dances, or even slight tears of joy.
Of course, there are many flaws within the industry. The standards that fashion media companies often perpetuate can be problematic, to say the least. But when it’s done right, fashion can have an incredibly positive effect. That’s what keeps drawing me back to it. So, how can you overcome the negative and discover what truly works for you? It’s all about discovering your personal style. Below I’ll be sharing exactly how to find the designs that make you feel incredible while expressing your individuality so that you can let fashion be a self-confidence tool rather than a hindrance.
The Brew
Owning a signature style will make you feel more comfortable in your own skin, and therefore more confident. You’ll only be wearing the clothes that speak to you, and make you feel good. Not only will you feel better on a daily basis, but sticking to one aesthetic will make your life easier. You’ll know exactly what to look for whenever it’s time to shop for something new. You’ll also probably save money and space in your wardrobe, as you won’t be distracted by designs that don’t serve you.
When you discover and develop your personal style, you’ll be able to view fashion as a form of self-expression instead of a trend-dictating machine. It will help you unleash your creativity and feel at peace with your body.
Tips for discovering your personal style
Ignore trends
Dressing like everyone else is the best way to stray from your personal style. Trends are often the biggest source of disappointment in fashion. If a certain design doesn’t suit your skin tone or body type, it likely won’t have a positive impact on your self-confidence.
Of course, if a trend pops up that you truly love, feel free to try it out. If it’s a success, you can keep it in your wardrobe rotation season after season. Don’t worry about it feeling ‘out’ or ‘dated’ – fashion is notoriously cyclical, and everything comes back around. And besides – the same designers that dictate trends rarely stray from their own uniforms!
Pay attention to how your clothing makes you feel.
You probably have a pair of jeans or a top that makes you feel amazing. Maybe the fabric feels especially soft against your skin, or the fit is extra flattering for your body. Don’t be afraid to wear those pieces on repeat, and mirror the rest of your wardrobe around them. These will act as the cornerstones of your personal style since they reveal your favorite silhouettes, textures, and colors.
Look to the past for inspiration.
Is there a specific era of fashion that you love? Maybe it’s the bohemian, flower power movement of the 60s and 70s, or the sleek minimalism of the 90s. These will also be the keys to your aesthetic. Sticking firmly to one theme looks intentional, and besides – the vintage look is in!
If you can’t think of any eras that you admire yet, feel free to do some research. Flip through old-fashioned magazines or watch iconic movies from the past until you figure out which styles appeal to you the most. You may also find yourself drawn to aesthetics that match your interests or cultural background, and that’s perfectly normal. Our lifestyles and backgrounds will inevitably have some influence on our personal style – just make sure that you’re happy with it!
When in doubt, stick to timeless pieces.
If you’re still not sure where to start, you can always keep it simple and timeless. Certain things will never go out of style, like classic white t-shirts, blue jeans, and trench coats. Building up a strong foundation of wardrobe staples is always helpful. Once you figure out other looks that you like, you can always add in accent pieces.
The Pour
Discovering the joy of fashion will definitely have a positive impact on your life. We all need to wear clothes, so why not find the ones that evoke joy? I promise – they exist.
