The Story We’re Told vs. the Truth Beneath It
Surface Statement: Menstruation is messy, disruptive, and painful.
What’s Really Happening: Menstruation is the visible outcome of a tightly coordinated hormonal cycle. Rising estrogen thickens the uterine lining, preparing it to host a fertilized egg. If no egg implants, progesterone levels fall sharply, triggering the shedding of that lining. What looks like “just bleeding” is in fact your endocrine system, ovaries, and uterus executing a monthly reset — an ongoing dialogue between brain and body.
Menstruation as Renewal, Not Just Reproduction
Surface Statement: Your period just means you’re not pregnant.
What’s Really Happening:
- Bone Health: Estrogen regulates how calcium is absorbed and stored in bone. Regular cycles help maintain bone density; missed cycles can weaken this process years before osteoporosis is diagnosed.
