Opening Notes from Traciana
This diary is part of the in-the-making chapter of Happiness 360. While I was talking with Josh, my podcast editor, about Hustle Detox, I told him one of its core promises had to be helping people find clarity and confidence.
When I began to think about how I’ve cultivated that in my own life, Josephine Baker came to mind, I shared that with Josh, and he asked me to sit with it: “Why Josephine?”
This diary is the answer I brought back to him.
The Diary Entry
I’ve been thinking of Josephine Baker again.
Not just her sequins or banana skirts — but the way she carried contradictions. How she turned exile into liberation, stages into sanctuaries, every border into a possibility of reinvention.
In my mind’s eye, she looks straight at me, teasing and tender all at once:
“Chérie, took you long enough to come back home to yourself.”
She’s right, of course. She always is.
I realize now why she comes to me in this moment: because I’ve been reflecting on the cornerstones of my own life — arts and travel, culture and creativity. They’ve always been the way I return to clarity and confidence, the way I find grounding when belonging felt fractured, the way I stand taller when the world asks me to shrink.
Growing up between Harlem and Paris, Josephine’s story was woven into mine. She showed me that art and travel weren’t luxuries — they were lifelines. Galleries gave me sanctuary. Train rides became meditation. Airports, stairwells, riversides — they restored me when nothing else could.
Josh’s question echoes again: “Why Josephine?”
Because she embodies everything this path has taught me: that clarity comes when I stop waiting for permission to belong, and confidence arrives when I keep moving, even without knowing the ending.
When I shared this updated diary with Josh, he told me the direction was strong enough to become a full episode. And that’s how this part of the journey is unfolding — beginning as a diary, becoming a conversation, and growing into Hustle Detox.
